Is Praying Useless?

Coming from me, this question may come as a shock. I had to ask. What did your gut tell you?

It wasn’t as much a question as it was a pop quiz.

Your own visceral response indicates your spiritual health. To paraphrase a one popular quote:

Whether you think it is or you think it isn’t – you’re right.

Mark 11:24  Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.

Now by referring to the above verse I might stand accused of purporting a “name it and claim it” ideology. Such is not the point. The verse says what it says. What I will ask is: what happens to those who pray who do not believe they will receive?

James 5:16  Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
17  Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months.
18  And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.

Is praying useless? My own answer is if my heart is right with God, then never. If my heart is not right with God then never.

May Almighty God bless you and keep you in the name of our Lord Christ Jesus.

Slow News Day – A Respite

Interesting thought – to me anyway – about the Subject – “A Respite”. Originally I was thinking “Taking a Breather” and I decided on “Respite”. What’s so interesting about that? The word “respite” has the same root as respiration – or breathing. Hmmm.

Okay I checked around and, yes, I did look beyond “The Gateway Pundit” and nothing really grabbed me.  So for today, I’ll post this:

It’s one of my favorites. God bless.

A Debate on AI – the REAL Issue

So I decided to comment on Elon Musk’s warnings about AI on Lance Wallnau’s Facebook page.  For the most part I said we’ll never see true AI. And I added that any AI that does emerge can be no better than the programmer’s involved. This is true of any software. Call it what you will, any AI program is a program. It’s software. Can it learn? Certainly it can, but this so-called “learning” does not make it sentient and that is the sort of AI everyone wants to extrapolate this concept to. It ain’t happening. That doesn’t  mean one or more programming groups can’t or won’t develop dangerous AI wannabe programs. More than likely they will. But there is a bigger issue at state.

GOD.

All this hand-wringing over AI diverts focus from the things of God. Let the non-Christians fret over AI, we Christians have more pressing issues at hand. Christ is coming. When? I don’t know. No man does. Jesus said so himself so it is not for us to know. What should we do instead? Whatever God calls us to do. Me? I’m posting, praying, studying, and whatever other godly tasks come my way.  What about you?

Privileged to Speak for God

Anyone who has read more than a few of my posts knows I write about God a lot. Up until very recently I hesitated to come out and say I am speaking for God. After all, who am I to suggest such a thing, to no less presume to speak for the Creator of the heavens and the earth?

Then there’s the “accountability” thing. I was always taught those who speak or teach God’s Word are going to be held accountable for what they teach.

James 3:1 Let not many of you be teachers, my brothers, knowing that we will receive heavier judgment.

2 For in many things we all stumble. If anyone doesn’t stumble in word, the same is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also. (WEB)

Well, gee, it might not matter much if I actually say I’m teaching or not. In fact, another scripture says I’m going to have to account for everything I say no matter what.

Matthew 12:36 I tell you that every idle word that men speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment.

37 For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” (WEB)

At this point I can only ask and pray for forgiveness because I know I’ve said a lot of stupid things. The good news is, when it comes to things pertaining to God, my tendency is to strive for accuracy and speak earnestly. If those “idle words” are going to count against me, I hope my inclination to be as accurate as possible when speaking God’s Word will be counted in my favor. Even so, I’d rather lean on grace than any sort of balance sheet.

Speak for GOD? ME?! What about YOU!?

Uh-oh, I stumbled across a bigger issue. Now let’s not forget that “idle word” thingy Jesus spoke of. I don’t know about you but I’m not all that clear on what he meant by an “idle word”. If the definition is broad, a lot of us could be in big trouble. For the record, Thayer’s defines the usage in this verse as “unprofitable” though the Greek word generally means “lazy” or “unproductive”. I have to admit, I’ve said a lot of “unprofitable” things in my own life. However, there’s this other thing nagging in the back of my mind. It goes to the concept of “good and evil” or “truth and lies”.

Look, James clearly indicates those who teach will be held to a higher standard, BUT Jesus said we would ALL be accounting for our words – at least the idle ones. The apostle Paul also wrote of giving an account to God.

Romans 14:12 So then each one of us will give account of himself to God. (WEB)

The difference is he didn’t limit the account to mere words.

I bring this up to point out how it looks like we are all going to be in the hot seat at some point. Now I’m not saying this to scare anyone. Granted, I do feel a chill run up my spine when I look back at some of the things I’ve said and done. Sure God is gracious and yes, I DO believe I’m forgiven. The thing is, I know I don’t deserve it. All the more reason to be thankful for God’s grace and forgiveness. And all the more reason to forgive others for their slights against me. My own slate needs more than a simple cleaning, it demands a good scrubbing.

So here we are looking ahead. Heck, why not look where we stand right now? Let’s say we can accept God has forgiven us for our past, um, indiscretions. Now what? My first thought is to give thanks. For me this is always a good place to start. My second thought is where I always stumble. I know me. The very idea of never again saying or doing anything ungodly is, well, like a pitcher vowing to pitch a perfect game every time for the rest of his career. I just don’t see it happening. So I’m already figuring I’m going to making mistakes. In comes my third thought: “so be it”.

Speaking for myself, I can mostly pick my way through life without actively doing wrong. For me, it’s my mouth that gets me in the most hot water. James had me pegged there.

James 3:5 So the tongue is also a little member, and boasts great things. See how a small fire can spread to a large forest!

6 And the tongue is a fire. The world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature, and is set on fire by Gehenna.

7 For every kind of animal, bird, creeping thing, and thing in the sea, is tamed, and has been tamed by mankind.

8 But nobody can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

9 With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who are made in the image of God.

10 Out of the same mouth comes forth blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so.

Few of us are going to take a vow of silence. I’m sure I’d break a record for how fast I broke that vow. How about you? Would you be a contender for that record? I thought maybe. So what’s the alternative?

We can choose our words carefully. Lance Wallnau had a thought. He said, “Pray before you say anything about anyone.” While this may not be an easy habit to get into, I can see the usefulness. While I tend to hold back more in social situations, I am far freer with criticizing people I see on video, online, and in social media. Would these count as “idle words”? How could they not? Ouch.

Now… About That “Speaking for God” Bit…

So far most of what I’ve done is detail the downside. My goal was to impress upon you how all of our words are likely to count for something. Each of us will be responsible as to how our words will tally up. With this understanding under our belt it seems reasonable to, at the very least, tread carefully moving forward. That said, I contend we can do far better than that.

Ephesians 4:25 Therefore, putting away falsehood, speak truth each one with his neighbor. For we are members one of another.

26 “Be angry, and don’t sin.” Don’t let the sun go down on your wrath,

27 neither give place to the devil.

28 Let him who stole steal no more; but rather let him labor, working with his hands the thing that is good, that he may have something to give to him who has need.

29 Let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but such as is good for building up as the need may be, that it may give grace to those who hear.

30 Don’t grieve the Holy Spirit of God, in whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander, be put away from you, with all malice.

32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you. (WEB)

While all of the above is well worth taking to heart, let us, for the moment, focus on those things dealing with our tongues:

Ephesians 4:25 Therefore, putting away falsehood, speak truth each one with his neighbor. For we are members one of another.

Ephesians 4:29 Let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but such as is good for building up as the need may be, that it may give grace to those who hear.

How much better would our lives be if we only stopped speaking falsehoods (yes, even those “little white lies”) and stopped badmouthing? (corrupt speech is directly translated as “putrid speech”). What if we stopped grumbling and complaining and instead, endeavored to give thanks?

On top of all this, what if we forgave others rather than curse them? I hate to admit this but a great deal of my own grumbling is directed at people who annoy me because of actions that are likely more thoughtless than evil. “Did she HAVE to pull out in front of me JUST to turn a half mile down the road?” Instead of cursing, what if I thought or said, “Thank you Father for allowing me plenty of time to slow down for this driver. I forgive her for pulling out in front of me so abruptly. Bless her and keep her.” Which reaction produces good fruit?

The 1% Solution

In his groundbreaking book “Atomic Habits”, James Clear advocates pursuing tiny changes – aiming at improving a mere 1% per day. Imagine applying that concept to your walk with God. Too often we consider an idea by allowing our minds to run to the finish line. Winning a marathon is simply too high a goal for many of us. Heck, the thought of running a whole mile makes me shudder, but anyone can walk around the block. A simple 1% improvement over that each day could result in walking a marathon distance. At some point, many of us could improve our health to run a bit, then a bit more.

Now apply this concept to your walk with God. Can you do one thing consistently that you do not now do? Build on that. Walk an additional step tomorrow and the next day.

Philippians 3:13 Brothers, I don’t regard myself as yet having taken hold, but one thing I do. Forgetting the things which are behind, and stretching forward to the things which are before,

14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

If anyone in scripture could be pegged as an example of a Christian who continually tried to improve, I cannot point to any better than the apostle Paul. Not only did he dedicate his life to speaking the gospel, but he kept his “day job” as a tentmaker, earning his own way so as not to burden others financially. As dedicated and as godly as Paul was, he strove to do better. What better example to follow than his?

As we will have to give an account anyway, why not strive to improve ourselves every day? Instead of vowing to “turn over a new leaf”, doesn’t it make more sense to look for ways to improve a little every day. To that end, I highly recommend “Atomic Habits”. James Clear’s method is easy to understand and simple to implement. That said, what “habits” should we strive to build?

Three habits come to mind for starters – prayer, reading and studying scripture. Of these, studying scripture may be more daunting than the others. Though I’ve heard countless excuses why people just “don’t have time” to read their bibles. They are fooling themselves. Of course one has time. We all do. We all have the same amount of time each day – exactly 24 hours. How we prioritize our time is a more accurate measure. If your priority is your walk with God, then you will make time for these things. Whatever reasons you may have for not pursuing them are something you should consider in light of your walk. For example what if someone says “I’m to busy making a living.” Is such a person acknowledging God as their sufficiency in all things? You get the idea.

Sad to say, the habit of grumbling, cursing and such, may be one of the more difficult habit’s to address. Even Clear’s book doesn’t sufficiently address it. Why? Because this habit is more reactionary than others. For me, I have to first catch myself grumbling. I am making progress but it is easy to slip. I liken it to when I smoked. That habit of reaching for a cigarette after a meal or when walking out of a building can be a toughie. Even though the cigarettes are long gone (24 years now), it took a long time to reframe that desire.

My regular prayer time helps as I include prayer to help me pray more during the day as well as to be more aware of what I say. I also pray that I can bring hymns and spiritual songs to mind throughout the day. In keeping with both these endeavors, I’ve developed one habit of singing “I’ve Got the Joy, Joy, Joy” at least every time I begin down my driveway. Now I’m branching out to do so whenever I get in my car. To spare any passengers, I sing to myself when I am not alone. 🙂

Our Christian Privilege

As Christians, it is our privilege to speak God’s word. As a practical matter we have a choice with every word we speak. Will we choose to speak words that edify – build up or words that tear down? What words do you want to be accountable for? Beyond that, those things we say indicate where are hearts are.

Matthew 15:17 Don’t you understand that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the belly, and then out of the body?

18 But the things which proceed out of the mouth come out of the heart, and they defile the man.

19 For out of the heart come forth evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual sins, thefts, false testimony, and blasphemies.

If you spend your day cursing, grumbling, complaining and such – where is your heart? Where is God in your life? Do you think such individuals are drawing closer to God or moving away from him?

Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your heart to the Lord.

17 Whatever you do, in word or in deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father, through him.

I cannot speak for you but as I visualize the above verse in my mind, I have a hard time placing myself in the picture. Once I ran across a woman in a supermarket. She was a Christian who was so at peace she radiated with joy. She told me God had healed her from a terminal illness and it changed her life. While I did not envy how she got to where she was, I admired her walk. If that store lost power, I’m almost certain we could all navigate by the light she gave off. I am certain every single one of us can walk as she walked.

Philippians 2:13 For it is God who works in you both to will and to work, for his good pleasure.

14 Do all things without murmurings and disputes,

15 that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you are seen as lights in the world,

16 holding up the word of life; that I may have something to boast in the day of Christ, that I didn’t run in vain nor labor in vain.

Wherever we go it is God who is working in us, yes, even on our bad days. As I said, I don’t always see myself as such, but that doesn’t stop me from trying. What I’ve found is the more I seek God, the more I endeavor to put on that new man, the easier it gets.

Today I am privileged to share these thoughts, these words with you. When I leave this keyboard to go out into the world, I am privileged to speak the word to others, to shine as a light in the world. While I didn’t get where I am today all at once and I am far from where I’d like to be, I strive make that little 1% progress each day. It adds up.

1 Thessalonians 1:6 You became imitators of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Spirit,

7 so that you became an example to all who believe in Macedonia and in Achaia.

8 For from you has sounded forth the word of the Lord, not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith toward God has gone forth; so that we need not to say anything.

9 For they themselves report concerning us what kind of a reception we had from you; and how you turned to God from idols, to serve a living and true God,

Colossians 4:6 Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.

1 Peter 3:15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts; and always be ready to give an answer to everyone who asks you a reason concerning the hope that is in you, with humility and fear:

You, too, are privileged. You also have a choice. You can take your privilege for granted or you can embrace it, make it you own, live it. Even if you see yourself as the most miserable human being on the planet, you can change. The hardest part may be the decision to take that first step. Thankfully, these steps often reap instant rewards, and if they don’t, those rewards will be waiting for you in heaven. The decision you make now will affect your entire life, even if you decide to do nothing. I’m rooting for you to decide to accept your privilege and make the most of it. God bless you.

Even MORE Revival – Hallelujah!

Earlier I posted the Tweet below on FnBook and Twitter. The song America by Chris Tomlin came to mind. I also posted the lyrics below.

As I’ve been posting, only God can save and restore our nation and for Him to work we must turn to him! Ask yourself, why should God restore our nation if we continue in our sinful ways?

The time for revival has come. Praise the Lord!

God, we cry out for Your mercyWe cry out for Your in our landAnd really see You as You areThat Your glory would fill this placeLet Your kingdom come and let Your will be doneLet Your kingdom come to America

Asbury University Revival and Beyond

Yesterday marked the end of the Asbury University revival. Strangely enough, while it began spontaneously, the end was planned. However even the end offered some deeply spiritual connotations.

The way I heard it, the revival began after a regular chapel prayer. The students lingered. One stood up and started listing his faults. Things snowballed from there to gain international attention. It all ended yesterday, February 23, 2023 as the college hosed the National Collegiate Day of Prayer. That Asbury University hosted this was no last minute detail – it had been scheduled two years previously. But that’s not the only oddity.

Back in 1970, there was another spontaneous revival at, you guessed it, Asbury University. For those with long memories, 1970 was remarkable for yet another historical landmark, a secular one. The Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl. Yes. They. Did. What does it all mean? I don’t know.

What I can say with absolute conviction is God’s hand is evident in this outpouring. Of this I have no doubt. I see no other logical explanation. As for what it means, well, I suggest we each ask God what it means to us, personally. Surely this has touched the lives of every person who heard of it in one way or another. Just like anything else, each of us takes away something different, something intimate.

My hope is this will spark revival across the globe. It need not make the news as long as it touches hearts and brings those of us who claim Christ closer to him as well as our Heavenly Father. Additionally my hope is it will bring new believers to Christ, as happened in Asbury. The world needs Christ now more than ever and Christ needs his body to come to him, for us to shed our differences and turn our eyes and our hearts to him.

As for myself, I can only hope those things Asbury has stirred in me is just the beginning. You may have noticed my posts have slowed a bit lately. This week I’ve been struggling to write something I felt worth sharing. It’s not “writer’s block”, I don’t believe in that nonsense, but I cannot seem to find a satisfactory finish for those thoughts I’ve put down. I started to wonder if I was indeed finished. I don’t think so but as I prayed about it, God has shown me where I need to gear up. That something is prayer.

It’s not to say I haven’t been praying but I’m sensing the need to expand upon those things I pray for and pray more for those things I already lift in prayer. So I will pray for those around me, for those is positions of power and authority, for those willing to lay down their lives for others and their families and for the families of those who have laid down their lives. Of course I’ll pray for revival and for my nation, and my brethren in Christ. No doubt the more I pray the more I’ll find to pray for.

None of this means my two regular readers (or anyone else for that matter) should give up hope of new posts. I’ve not been given any guidance, much less clear guidance that I am to stop writing and posting. So I’ll continue to post as I have something to share. Hopefully this will happen on a regular basis – at least once per week. If you think of it, say a prayer for me now and then.

Calling the Body of Christ to Unity!

The previous two posts dealt with the body of Christ and how we are members of that body. These are important concepts. How do I know they are important? GOD wrote us letters about these things! God doesn’t do fluff, therefore everything He tells us is important. Now I’m about to delve into how these important concepts apply to us as Christians today.

You should know already that God chose you to be a member, part of the body of Christ. You should also know your part in God’s plan is important. Remember, God doesn’t do fluff, so you are not fluff. Look. I can relate to how some of you might feel. As a writer, I tend to cringe when I see authors with 10, 20, 40 books to their names. For many of them, publishing books is just a sideline. Me? Not so much. Writing has rarely been my day job. I’ve been a working stiff all my life and those jobs I’ve held, well, they were just jobs. When I’m being honest with myself, I have to admit I failed to understand the concepts I’m revealing here. That said, lemmetellya, among the humans in this world, there are few who can claim to be as lowly and inconsequential as a writer. Anybody who reads is a critic. Anything we publish is open season with no bag limits. No wonder so many of us writers are quivering blobs of insecurity. Whatever your lot in life, I feel you.

Now that my pity party is over, I should point out God does not see me like that. I cannot tell you how He DOES see my walk in any detail, but I know all those menial things I’ve done in my life add up to something. How can I say that? Because God doesn’t do fluff. Even when I can’t see the value in my life, God does. Who am I to argue with the Creator of the universe?

So let’s talk about this unity thing. First I have to fess up. The word “unity” only appears in the KJV twice. Both instances are in Ephesians, in the same chapter no less. Each of those instances refer to something different. Go figure.

Ephesians 4:3 being eager to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

Ephesians 4:13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a full grown man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ;

There you have it – the unity of the spirit and the unity of the faith. No way, no how, these two can refer to the same thing. But wait a minute. The Greek word for “unity” is “henotes”. That word is derived from the Greek word “heis”. That Greek work heis? It means one. Oh.

Ephesians 4:1 I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to walk worthily of the calling with which you were called,

2 with all lowliness and humility, with patience, bearing with one another in love;

3 being eager to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as you also were called in one hope of your calling;

5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism,

6 one God and Father of all, who is over all, and through all, and in us all.

God talks a lot about “one”. We are all one body with one Lord, Jesus Christ, who is the head of this one body. Now consider the second use of the word “unity” below in context.

Ephesians 4:7 But to each one of us was the grace given according to the measure of the gift of Christ.

8 Therefore he says, “When he ascended on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts to men.”

9 Now this, “He ascended,” what is it but that he also first descended into the lower parts of the earth?

10 He who descended is the one who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.

11 He gave some to be apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, shepherds and teachers;

12 for the perfecting of the saints, to the work of serving, to the building up of the body of Christ;

13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a full grown man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ;

14 that we may no longer be children, tossed back and forth and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in craftiness, after the wiles of error;

15 but speaking truth in love, we may grow up in all things into him, who is the head, Christ;

16 from whom all the body, being fitted and knit together through that which every joint supplies, according to the working in measure of each individual part, makes the body increase to the building up of itself in love.

Whew! I know. It’s a lot to take in, but do take it in. Let it sink in deep into you. This is important. You are important. You are a member of THE body of Christ. It doesn’t matter if you run the company or if you “just” empty the waste baskets, you are where the Creator of the universe Himself placed you. He didn’t just place you in your job but He also placed you in your city, with your family and in your church and so on. In short you are exactly where you are supposed to be in God’s plan for you. This is something I’ve often realized at certain points of my own life – far too often to my disappointment. You read that right – to my disappointment.

The question that should have come to my mind then and your mind now is: was I right to be disappointed? Well, yes and no. “Yes”, in respect to the idea I knew then and I know now that I was capable of doing better. I was underachieving. “No”, because, upon my realization, I should have thanked God profusely for said understanding, then asked, okay, now what?

What took me so long to understand is God is ever gracious to forgive our sins and overlook our shortcomings, but even more importantly, He always meets us where we ARE.

Philippians 3:13 Brothers, I don’t regard myself as yet having taken hold, but one thing I do. Forgetting the things which are behind, and stretching forward to the things which are before,

14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

Now I don’t think for a moment Paul was stretching forward into next year, next month, or even next week. He wasn’t look ahead to tomorrow. Rather, he was reaching for what God put right in front of him. What else is there?

By this time you may be wondering what all of this has to do with “Calling the Body of Christ to Unity”. If you’ve ever tried to herd cats, or watched someone else attempt do do so, you may want to keep that in mind for the rest of this post. You need not go far into scripture to realize, compared to humans, herding cats is a breeze. Let’s start with Jesus, shall we?

Matthew 9:1 He entered into a boat, and crossed over, and came into his own city.

2 Behold, they brought to him a man who was paralyzed, lying on a bed. Jesus, seeing their faith, said to the paralytic, “Son, cheer up! Your sins are forgiven you.”

3 Behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, “This man blasphemes.”

4 Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts?

5 For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven;’ or to say, ‘Get up, and walk?’

6 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins…” (then he said to the paralytic), “Get up, and take up your mat, and go up to your house.”

7 He arose and departed to his house.

Here it was the scribes complaining. In the next passage, it was the disciples of John. Later on the Pharisees and then the Sadducees chimed in. Someone was always complaining no matter what Jesus did. Nor did it stop after they killed Jesus and God raised him from the dead.

Acts 6:1 And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration.

Signs, miracles, and wonders followed Jesus, and the twelve apostles, and the 70 sent out after that. Did Jesus’ detractors stop complaining? No. they found new ways to find fault. Even after Jesus died and God raised him from the dead, the complaining didn’t stop. The apostles and other believers continued demonstrating the power of God via signs, miracles, and wonders. It wasn’t enough. What does all this complaining – the murmuring lead to?

Division. Division is the opposite of unity. Rather than believe God, the detractors all had their own little inklings on how things ought to be. We know the source of all of this. That has not changed. But I want you to clearly see how even Jesus himself was the target of dissidents. Jesus lived a perfect life. He always did his father’s will. Yet he was crucified because the Jewish leadership would rather cling to their fiefdoms than submit to the authority of God Almighty.

The early church was likewise infected with divisive forces almost from the start. These divisions within the church didn’t really begin to take off, at least as far as scripture records, until believing Jews got wind of Gentiles being invited to the party.

Acts 15:1 And certain men which came down from Judaea taught the brethren, and said, Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved.

This was a major division in the early church, but it was not the only one by far. According to Corinthians, early Christians were finding numerous reasons to split off.

1 Corinthians 1:12 Now I mean this, that each one of you says, “I follow Paul,” “I follow Apollos,” “I follow Cephas,” and, “I follow Christ.”

13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized into the name of Paul?

Here Paul all but directly tells the Corinthian church NOT to put him between themselves and Christ. Who are Apollos and Cephas? Cephas is Aramaic for Peter, the most prominent of the original twelve apostles . As for Apollos, his story, found in Acts, is interesting.

Acts 18:24 Now a certain Jew named Apollos, an Alexandrian by race, an eloquent man, came to Ephesus. He was mighty in the Scriptures.

25 This man had been instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, although he knew only the baptism of John.

26 He began to speak boldly in the synagogue. But when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside, and explained to him the way of God more accurately.

27 When he had determined to pass over into Achaia, the brothers encouraged him, and wrote to the disciples to receive him. When he had come, he greatly helped those who had believed through grace;

28 for he powerfully refuted the Jews, publicly showing by the Scriptures that Jesus was the Christ.

This passage says much of what we know about this man. He was a powerful speaker and persuasive but until he met Priscilla and Aquila, he “knew only the baptism of John”. It also says he “he spoke and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus”. Thus, he surely knew about the resurrection of Jesus and the new birth, though this passage doesn’t say it directly. The next section offers a bit more light.

Acts 19:1 It happened that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul, having passed through the upper country, came to Ephesus, and found certain disciples.

2 He said to them, “Did you receive the** Holy Spirit when you believed?” They said to him, “No, we haven’t even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”

3 He said, “Into what then were you baptized?” They said, “Into John’s baptism.”

4 Paul said, “John indeed baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe in the one who would come after him, that is, in Jesus.”

5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

6 When Paul had laid his hands on them, the* Holy [the]* Spirit came on them, and they spoke with other languages and prophesied.

7 They were about twelve men in all.

Jesus said as much himself:

Acts 1:5 For John indeed baptized in water, but you will be baptized in the* Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

As did John the Baptist:

Luke 3:16 John answered them all, “I indeed baptize you with water, but he comes who is mightier than I, the latchet of whose sandals I am not worthy to loosen. He will baptize you in the* Holy Spirit and fire,

From these verses and others there is a clear difference between water baptism and being baptized in spirit. On a personal note, I’ve always understood scripture indicates the spiritual baptism was to supersede water baptism, however this is not the practice in a majority of Christian churches today. Apollo was not the only one apparently confused on this issue. I do wonder how much impact his influence had on the early body of Christ.

Once again, we see division in the church. Oddly enough today’s body of Christ seems to be somewhat unified on this point, with most of them offering and sometimes insisting on water baptism while ignoring baptism in the spirit. Even these churches debate between sprinkling, dunking, and full immersion. This is a glaring example of division within the body of Christ. One article states the Baptists separate themselves from Presbyterians due to differences concerning baptism in the name of get this… UNITY!

What does Ephesians 4:5 state?

Ephesians 4:5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism,

Oh. I wonder which “one baptism” is THE one?

The letter to the Galatians deals with the disputes over circumcision in depth. According to the apostle Paul, there is no question. His contention was back up in full by the apostles in Jerusalem.

Acts 15:22 Then it seemed good to the apostles and the elders, with the whole assembly, to choose men out of their company, and send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas: Judas called Barsabbas, and Silas, chief men among the brothers.

23 They wrote these things by their hand: “The apostles, the elders, and the brothers, to the brothers who are of the Gentiles in Antioch, Syria, and Cilicia: greetings.

24 Because we have heard that some who went out from us have troubled you with words, unsettling your souls, saying, ‘You must be circumcised and keep the law,’ to whom we gave no commandment;

25 it seemed good to us, having come to one accord, to choose out men and send them to you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul,

26 men who have risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

27 We have sent therefore Judas and Silas, who themselves will also tell you the same things by word of mouth.

28 For it seemed good to the** Holy [**the] Spirit, and to us, to lay no greater burden on you than these necessary things:

29 that you abstain from things sacrificed to idols, from blood, from things strangled, and from sexual immorality, from which if you keep yourselves, it will be well with you. Farewell.”

Beyond their stance on circumcision, what strikes me most is what other instructions they gave to these churches… “abstain from things sacrificed to idols, from blood, from things strangled, and from sexual immorality”. That’s it. They saw no need for a detailed rule book or a statement of faith or doctrine. They kept things simple. Amazing that.

However Paul later wrote of a different vision – unity.

1 Corinthians 3:21 Therefore let no one boast in men. For all things are yours,

22 whether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come. All are yours,

23 and you are Christ’s, and Christ is God’s.

1 Corinthians 11:1 Be imitators of me, even as I also am of Christ.

If you look at all of Paul’s teachings, you will see again and again this sentiment. If every one of us, each member of the body of Christ put aside our differences and instead that we speak the same thing – that we “ be perfected together in the same mind and in the same judgment”. Also note while Paul encouraged the Corinthians to be followers of him, this was restricted to “as I am in Christ”, thus placing Christ, not Paul, in Christ’s proper place at the head of the body.

1 Corinthians 1:10 Now I beg you, brothers, through the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfected together in the same mind and in the same judgment.

Philippians 1:27 Only let your manner of life be worthy of the Gospel of Christ, that, whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of your state, that you stand firm in one spirit, with one soul striving for the faith of the Gospel;

What an example we would be if we only lived God’s Word! If we set aside our differences, put away the “old man” and put on the “new man”.

Ephesians 4:21 if indeed you heard him, and were taught in him, even as truth is in Jesus:

22 that you put away, as concerning your former way of life, the old man, that grows corrupt after the lusts of deceit;

23 and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind,

24 and put on the new man, who in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of truth.

25 Therefore, putting away falsehood, speak truth each one with his neighbor.

30 Don’t grieve the* Holy [the]* Spirit of God, in whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander, be put away from you, with all malice.

32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

Surely some of you are thinking I might as well become a “cat herder”. No way are all the Christians in the world going to give up “their own beliefs” to try unite into a single church. But wait! Aren’t some already attempting this? Isn’t that called “Ecumenism”? The short answer is, yes, and the organization is called “The World Council of Churches” (WCC). This is NOT what I’m talking about. Not at all.

For my part, I know this organization, the WCC, exists and that is about it. From my standpoint, they neither claim nor exert any real authority. In fact, as far as I can tell, the only church I see claiming a hierarchy with direct authority from God is the Catholic Church and they are not a part of the World Council! Oh my. Strangely enough, the World Council apparently insists members “pledge allegiance” to the Nicene Creed in one sentence and then releases any church from the responsibility of adhering to it in the next. Ironically, the Nicene Creed established the doctrine of the trinity in the year 325 A. D. and is the foundational doctrine of, wait for it… the Catholic Church.

Even today, anyone who fails to embrace the doctrine of the trinity is typically declared a non-Christian by most “True Christians” even though nowhere in scripture is the word “trinity” even found, much less any indication that one must accept this creed in order to accept Christ as Lord and Savior. Well, yeah, that kinda makes sense considering the new birth predates the Nicene Creed by over 300 years. So much for unity!

If it is not obvious to you, I’ll state it plainly: I am not, in any way, advocating any “centralized” organization to unify the body of Christ. THAT would be herding cats. I agree. It ain’t gonna work. Nor am I suggesting attempting to formulate any sort of “document” or doctrine we can all agree on. We have both already, it’s called the Holy Bible. Even that is subject to debate as I doubt if any two of us Christians could completely agree as to what it all means.

Rather, what I am suggesting is quite radical. If we each look to Christ as the head we will naturally be one body. How can we accomplish this? We each individually, strive to “put on the new man” as best we can according to our understanding. Meanwhile we accept those brothers and sisters in Christ as they are and do our best to find common ground. The end result is not our responsibility. We need only account for our own walk in Christ.

For me, the most common ground would be… do you accept Christ Jesus as your Lord and Savior and believe God raised him from the dead? (Romans 10:9-10) Should someone offer something else, I’m willing to listen, consider, and pray about it, though I don’t anticipate many problems with what I consider to be the least common denominator of our faith.

In the end it is God who determines who is and who is not a member of the body of Christ. How would we then know? I would say either by a right dividing of scripture and/or discernment of spirits. Scripture is very clear when it comes to Romans 10:9-10. I see no ambiguity at all. Either one confesses Jesus as Lord or one does not. One either believes God raised him from the dead or one does not. To this date the only real confusion I see is from those who say Jesus got himself up from the dead. I’m still waiting for an explanation of what “dead” would mean in such a case. Here is another clear verse:

1 John 4:15 Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God remains in him, and he in God.

Many versions render “remains” as “dwells”. While I prefer the latter rendering – either way, is there any doubt that confessing Jesus is the Son of God is the litmus test here? Why try to apply rocket science? Once one’s credentials as a born again believer are established, what else do we need? Certainly some things such as a brother or sister in Christ practicing sin should not be glossed over. The scriptures provide for such cases. As for other “doctrinal” differences? Should I refuse to fellowship with siblings in Christ because they sprinkle rather than dunk? Or whether they do believe or do not believe in water baptism? Should I shun a church depending on whether they believe in speaking in tongues or not?

Granted there are some commonly accepted practices or beliefs I may not be able abide by. I’m just as sure there are some things I accept that other believers cannot abide by. The answers to these contentions are always addressed in scripture if the contentions are valid. In such cases we should be seeking clear understanding of the pertinent scriptures. Those areas that remain unclear cannot (or should not) be issues serious enough to cause a rent in the body of Christ.

The bottom line as I see it is we have clear guidance as to our we should live our lives as members of the body of Christ. By far the most importance guidance is to walk in love.

Ephesians 4:15 but speaking truth in love, we may grow up in all things into him, who is the head, Christ;

16 from whom all the body, being fitted and knit together through that which every joint supplies, according to the working in measure of each individual part, makes the body increase to the building up of itself in love.

Ephesians 5:2 Walk in love, even as Christ also loved you, and gave himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling fragrance.

Colossians 2:2 that their hearts may be comforted, they being knit together in love, and gaining all riches of the full assurance of understanding, that they may know the mystery of God, both of the Father and of Christ,

Is it any wonder that wonderful passage in 1 Corinthians 12, dealing with us as members of the body of Christ, is followed by 1 Corinthians 13, a treatise on love?

1 Corinthians 13:13 But now faith, hope, and love remain—these three. The greatest of these is love.

Romans 13:9 For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not give false testimony,” “You shall not covet,” and whatever other commandments there are, are all summed up in this saying, namely, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

10 Love doesn’t harm a neighbor. Love therefore is the fulfillment of the law.

God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only-begotten Son, that whosoever believes on him may not perish, but have life eternal.

Jesus so loved us, he laid down his life for us.

John 15:12 “This is my commandment, that you love one another, even as I have loved you.

13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.

1 John 3:16 By this we know love, because he laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.

I cannot tell you how many times someone has preached the doctrine of love to me, not to mention how many times I’ve read and studied these scriptures and contemplated these topics on my own. Thinking about love and vowing to do better is one thing, practicing love in the real world is another.

We can wake up in the morning praising God, soak our minds in His Word and in prayer, immerse ourselves in inspirational teaching and music on the drive to work and then someone cuts in front of our car. Or you find that fine thing you accomplished yesterday on your desk with REJECTED stamped across it. Or a coworker stops by and drops a bit of juicy gossip. At times like these, we need to redirect ourselves – renew our minds to God’s Word and hold fast to the truth.

In my next post I’ll offer some deeper thoughts on the practical side of living love. Meanwhile, forget about the unity of the body of Christ. In the physical world you need not think about reaching a landmark you can see ahead of you. You only need set your sights on it and take one step after another. Your head sees your goal via your eyes and your body goes where you feet take you. The same is true in the body of Christ. Christ this the head of the body for a reason. He will direct the body. It is not our place to unify the body it is his. Your part is to function as a member of the body. If you are a mechanic then be a mechanic in Christ. If you are a doctor – be a doctor in Christ.

Colossians 3:23 Whatsoever ye do, labour at it heartily, as doing it to the Lord, and not to men;

24 knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the recompense of the inheritance; ye serve the Lord Christ.

May God bless you and keep you in the name of our Lord Christ Jesus

Footnotes

All scriptures quoted today were from the World English Bible (WEB)

Longer note on the article “the” as pertaining to the words “holy” and “spirit”: Regarding the words “holy” (Greek hagion) and “spirit” (Greek pneuma), our English versions tend to insert or omit the article “the” at will with little or no regard to the underlying Greek texts. The verses I’ve noted above demonstrate this quite well. Judge for yourself how including or excluding this article can alter one’s understanding. Those verses where this article “the” with a single asterisk * with an additional [the]* included denote where this second article “the” was omitted as explained below. Verses with the article “the” followed by a double asterisk ** are instances where there was no such article in most, if not all, Greek texts.

* In the Greek texts in these verses, the article “the” precedes both the word for holy (hagion) and spirit (pneuma) so “the Holy the Spirit” is a more accurate rendering and differentiates the Giver (God) who is Holy and who is Spirit from the gift of holy spirit. Given the common, nearly ubiquitous usage of these terms in current Christian circles, I can only ascertain our English renderings tend to follow the doctrines and traditions of men rather than God as pertaining to these words.

** no article “the” in the Greek

Per articles, punctuation, and caps, another longer note: Much confusion stems from seemingly haphazard sprinkling of articles, punctuation, and capital letters in English versions of the bible. For example, the Greek texts had no capital letters at all so one must be careful about assuming authority. I am guilty of this myself where I typically capitalize God and His Word, etc.

The Body of Christ – Members in Particular

1 Corinthians 12:27 Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.

The above is from the King James. The World English Bible (WEB) renders it a bit differently.

1 Corinthians 12:27 Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually.

Why quote both versions? To begin with, I understand lots of people don’t much like the KJV. I’m partial to it because I’ve been reading it for so long. Even so, I like to get a different perspective now and then. Too often I find passages I’ve either missed for years or lacked a fuller understanding. The above verse is a good example.

The word “particular” can mean many things in English. Individual is one synonym. Distinct is another. When dealing with the concept of the Body of Christ, it seems quite relevant to take in the parts as well as the whole. You and I are the parts. Christ Jesus, as the head, is also a part. This passage in Corinthians goes to great lengths to emphasize each of us is not just “a” part but an important part of the whole. Surely we would be lost without the head, Christ, but that doesn’t mean your part is not important. Consider another reference to members.

James 3:5 So the tongue is also a little member, and boasts great things. See how a small fire can spread to a large forest! (WEB)

In one verse, James gets to the heart of how one little member can affect much. What is the tongue? Apart from the taste function, is it not mere skin and muscle? Yet how much trouble can it cause? How much havoc can it wreak?

James 3:1 Let not many of you be teachers, my brothers, knowing that we will receive heavier judgment.

2 For in many things we all stumble. If anyone doesn’t stumble in word, the same is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also.

3 Indeed, we put bits into the horses’ mouths so that they may obey us, and we guide their whole body.

4 Behold, the ships also, though they are so big and are driven by fierce winds, are yet guided by a very small rudder, wherever the pilot desires.

5 So the tongue is also a little member, and boasts great things.

Taking verse one into account, one may ascertain James is speaking directly to teachers. If this is so, does the mean those who are not teachers are excluded? Without a doubt James indicates teachers will receive a “heavier judgment”. The qualifying word “heavier” (rendered more severe and greater in other versions) in no way suggests those who are NOT teachers will not receive judgment. Indeed, we know from other scriptures we will all give an account. So, no, even those who do not teach can take these words lightly.

That said, I am not pointing this passage out to expound on the tongue, as marvelous and terrifying as it can be. While physiologically there isn’t much to it, few can argue about the importance of having one. The same can be said about any part of our physical bodies. Why, then should any member of the body of Christ be considered unimportant or even expendable? (God help us!)

This passage in 1 Corinthians 12 goes to great lengths to make this point.

1 Corinthians 12:12 For as the body is one, and has many members, and all the members of the body, being many, are one body; so also is Christ.

13 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether bond or free; and were all given to drink into one Spirit.

14 For the body is not one member, but many.

15 If the foot would say, “Because I’m not the hand, I’m not part of the body,” it is not therefore not part of the body.

16 If the ear would say, “Because I’m not the eye, I’m not part of the body,” it’s not therefore not part of the body.

17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole were hearing, where would the smelling be?

18 But now God has set the members, each one of them, in the body, just as he desired.

19 If they were all one member, where would the body be?

20 But now they are many members, but one body.

21 The eye can’t tell the hand, “I have no need for you,” or again the head to the feet, “I have no need for you.”

22 No, much rather, those members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary.

23 Those parts of the body which we think to be less honorable, on those we bestow more abundant honor; and our unpresentable parts have more abundant propriety;

24 whereas our presentable parts have no such need. But God composed the body together, giving more abundant honor to the inferior part,

25 that there should be no division in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another.

26 When one member suffers, all the members suffer with it. Or when one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.

27 Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually.

Consider the above in light of Ephesians 1:4

Ephesians 1:4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and without blemish before him in love;

We are not simply members of the body of Christ but we were chosen before the foundation of the world to be part of the body! How incredible is that?! It doesn’t matter whether you are a sweeper in some obscure factory or a world leader – GOD ALMIGHTY chose you and put you where you are because only you could live your life. Recently, something Lance Wallnau said made this crystal clear to me.

Lance was talking about an interview he did with Georgia State Senator Mike Crotts who said he died, met Jesus and came back at the command of his wife Phyllis. As I heard the story, Mike says Jesus told him he still had work to do in government as a politician.

Now when I first heard this, one of my first thoughts was, “Senator? I never heard of this guy before. Must be he wasn’t much of one.” Of course I was thinking of a U.S. Senator as I’d expect one who was brought back from the dead to be more prominent. At this point, most of what I really know about the man is stated above. I cannot point to his record as a politician. His world and mine never intersected before Lance Wallnau brought him up. In fact, I do not believe we go directly to heaven when we die. I won’t go into all the scriptures I base my understanding on but they are extensive and far more plainly stated than those suggesting otherwise. So what gives?

First, allow me to give Senator Crotts’ testimony the benefit of the doubt. While scripture does indicate those who are “asleep” in Christ will rise upon his return, nothing in scripture says Senator Crotts couldn’t have seen Jesus when he died. There are others who’ve made similar, credible claims. They all have one thing in common, they lived to tell about their experiences. So even if my understanding is accurate, that does not preclude the possibilities of someone getting a peek at heaven.

So let’s say Crotts did die, he saw Jesus, and was sent back to live out his life as a politician. Okay, fine. Does that make his life any more or less important that yours or mine? Absolutely not! Whatever Senator Crotts did, it was stuff I’d never do. And he could never do what I’ve done in my life. Neither of us can do what you do. The bottom line here is, the events of the world does not, can not hinge on the actions of one person. In light of this…

Have you ever heard of the “butterfly effect”? Simply put, the theory states that the motions of a butterfly flapping its wings in, say, Japan puts into motion a series of events that have a significant impact on us here in America. At least that’s my take on the idea. While we may never know or understand all the nuances of this concept – there are a lot of butterflies out there – we can all nod to the idea that one tiny action we take now can reap some astounding (or horrifying) results.

If just one thing you do today can turn a ripple into a tidal wave, what about everything you do? Surely some actions will cause a greater affect than others, but which ones? On the negative side I can tell you from experience, I’ve seen more grief rain down on me for a single misspoken sentence or word even, than I ever bargained for. And, yes, I have seen some heartwarming results from a well-placed word also. If our lives tallied up to a sum total with the positives on one side and the negatives on the other, what would you want your balance to reflect?

As I indicated previously, these factors tend to be weighted so our lives are not just some game of sums. Every action you take produces fruit. That fruit can either be good fruit or bad fruit. In other words, you reap what you sow. How does all this relate to the body of Christ?

Imagine the impact the body of Christ would have if every member only yielded good fruit. Is this even possible?

Mark 10:27 Jesus, looking at them, said, “With men it is impossible, but not with God, for all things are possible with God.”

Now I cannot say whether this will ever happen. Nor can I say in will not ever happen. This is not for me or you to say. All I can do is sow actions that produce good fruit. I am only responsible for myself. Consequently, you are only responsible for yourself. You do your part and let God be God.

We are all part of the body of Christ, and members individually (or in particular). All of us were chosen before the foundation of the world to be holy and without blame before God in love. Why?

Ephesians 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared before that we would walk in them.

We were created in Christ to do good works. Where? Well, HERE – wherever “here” is for you. When? Whenever possible, in other words, all the time. What is the end goal? What does God have in mind for us? Well… eventually I’m expecting some sort of party in eternity, each of us still has work to do here on this earth. As members of the body of Christ who desire to serve our Lord Jesus and serve God, what should our goal be?

Ephesians 4:13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a full grown man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ;

Notice the first word “until”. Oh-oh, yeah, I did that – posted just that one verse, even though it seems to be missing context. There is more to all this than what you see above. In fact, God has a whole structure in place to get us all to that point. That said, this is the goal – one fully developed “person” (my rendering) with Jesus Christ as the head and us members as the body.

Already I’ve gone long in this post. Between this post and the previous, I’ve shown where we are the body of Christ and members individually. This was God’s plan from the beginning. As members, we are responsible for our own actions (what we sow) and the fruit we produce. Yet there seems to be something missing. WE are missing something. Let me ask you… ARE we coming to a “unity of the faith of the knowledge of the Son of God”? HAVE we “grown up”? What is the “measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ”?

If you are seeing what I am seeing, we not only are not there, rather, we seem to be drifting further and further apart. WHY? What I’m seeing is this is because we are taking our focus off Christ and turning onto each other.

2 Corinthians 10:1 Now I Paul, myself, entreat you by the humility and gentleness of Christ; I who in your presence am lowly among you, but being absent am of good courage toward you.

2 Yes, I beg you that I may not, when present, show courage with the confidence with which I intend to be bold against some, who consider us to be walking according to the flesh.

3 For though we walk in the flesh, we don’t wage war according to the flesh;

4 for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but mighty before God to the throwing down of strongholds,

5 throwing down imaginations and every high thing that is exalted against the knowledge of God, and bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ;

6 and being in readiness to avenge all disobedience, when your obedience will be made full.

7 Do you look at things only as they appear in front of your face? If anyone trusts in himself that he is Christ’s, let him consider this again with himself, that, even as he is Christ’s, so also we are Christ’s.

Consider this passage in light of our topic. In the broader context, Paul is specifically speaking of his ministry. Let’s face it, life was not always easy for the apostle Paul. It seems everywhere he went, trouble, i.e. tribulation, followed. He was constantly attacked, beaten, and thrown out of town. Here, he writes of those saying Paul was “walking in the flesh”. He didn’t deny it but he did immediately turn the focus to God.

2 Corinthians 10:3b …“we don’t wage war according to the flesh;

4 for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but mighty before God to the throwing down of strongholds,

5 throwing down imaginations and every high thing that is exalted against the knowledge of God, and bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ;”

This is the essence of our spiritual battle. While I contend our individual battles must first begin with our own minds, drawing closer to our Heavenly Father and our Lord Christ Jesus in our hearts, we cannot simply ignore those “imaginations and every high thing that is exalted against the knowledge of God”. Sure we can limit our exposure to such things but we “must needs go out into the world” (1 Corinthians 5:10 d)

Our goal, however, should be to get those beams out of our own eyes before we try to take the speck out of the eye of our brethren. Let me ask you… what would the world look like if each of us brought “thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ”? Personally, I think we would have no need to “police” our brothers and sisters in Christ because we would all be walking in the spirit, in love.

And THAT would evoke the vision of Ephesians 4:15-16

Ephesians 4:15 but speaking truth in love, we may grow up in all things into him, who is the head, Christ;

16 from whom all the body, being fitted and knit together through that which every joint supplies, according to the working in measure of each individual part, makes the body increase to the building up of itself in love.

WE are the body of Christ – with our risen Lord and Savior Christ Jesus at the head, and those of us to confess Jesus as Lord as members individually. Together we make the whole, however the only true head is Christ. To this end, each of us should be “bringing every thought in captivity to the obedience of Christ”. To this end he gave us apostles, prophets, evangelists, shepherds (pastors), and teachers to bring us all together.

While I can envision how rank and file believers like myself can join with those gifted in ministries such as above to attain the “measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ”, I find it difficult to reconcile that vision with what my own eyes see in today’s world – division, bickering, and so forth. Only God can accomplish this through His only-begotten Son Jesus the Christ. I don’t see God herding cats, thus WE must individually seek out and accept God’s Will in our lives. His Will is plainly stated in scriptures, particularly in the epistles to the church – the body of Christ. If we do those things, we shall surely see amazing things come to pass.

We Are ALSO the BODY of CHRIST!

Maybe you can tell me how many times I’ve posted WE are the government. If I’d bothered to try, I’d have lost count long ago. Newsflash: WE are also the body of Christ – at least those of us who have accepted Christ as our Lord and Savior. (Romans 10:9-10) The difference between the two statements is one only needs to be a US Citizen to be included in the first group. One must consciously accept Christ to be born again of God’s spirit and become part of the body. So this post is directed at my brethren in Christ in particular.

Romans 12:4 For even as we have many members in one body, and all the members don’t have the same function,

5 so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.

1 Corinthians 12:27 Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually.

Ephesians 5:23 for a husband is head of the wife, as also the Christ is head of the assembly. He is Saviour of the body. [“assembly” is the Greek word ekklēsía often rendered “church”]

(For the sake of consistency, I’ll quote from the World English Bible (WEB) today unless otherwise noted.)

Today, “diversity” seems to be all the rage everywhere. Oddly enough there is no one group more diverse than today’s Christians. There is nothing at all wrong with this, in fact, there is everything right about it. “For God so loved the WORLD, He gave his only-begotten Son.” While diversity is fine, there is another aspect that is not at all desirable… division. No scripture advocates division, quite the opposite is true. The verses quoted above stating we are “one body” only scratch the surface.

In Ephesians especially, the apostle Paul revealed the mystery “which in other generations has not been made known to the sons of men” (Ephasians 3:5). What is this “mystery”?

Ephesians 3:6 that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, and fellow members of the body, and fellow partakers of his promise in Christ Jesus through the Gospel,

Gentiles were and are anyone who was not of the nation of Israel. Israel was a chosen people. Why were they chosen and not some other group? (Using my best, indignantly snotty tone) Well, somebody had to draw the short straw. It was them. There were two primary reasons for a chosen group. First, the Messiah had to be able to trace his lineage back. Second, somebody had to prove beyond any shadow of a doubt that no one else could possibly fulfill the law. While the Jews performed admirably in this respect, any group could have done the job. Only one man, the only begotten Son of God, born of sinless blood, could perfectly fulfill the law. Now about that “joint heirs” bit.

Once again, we need to look at Israel. They were chosen and they were also promised to be heirs of God. That mystery comes into play because what God did not reveal to them is the rest of the nations, the gentiles would get equal footing in the Kingdom of God by accepting Christ Jesus as Savior. Now, if the Jews had been paying attention, they might have caught on. Jesus told them as much.

Matthew 20:1 “For the Kingdom of Heaven is like a man who was the master of a household, who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard.

2 When he had agreed with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard.

3 He went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace.

4 To them he said, ‘You also go into the vineyard, and whatever is right I will give you.’ So they went their way.

5 Again he went out about the sixth and the ninth hour, and did likewise.

6 About the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle. He said to them, ‘Why do you stand here all day idle?’

7 “They said to him, ‘Because no one has hired us.’ “He said to them, ‘You also go into the vineyard, and you will receive whatever is right.’

8 When evening had come, the lord of the vineyard said to his steward, ‘Call the laborers and pay them their wages, beginning from the last to the first.’

9 “When those who were hired at about the eleventh hour came, they each received a denarius.

10 When the first came, they supposed that they would receive more; and they likewise each received a denarius.

11 When they received it, they murmured against the master of the household,

12 saying, ‘These last have spent one hour, and you have made them equal to us, who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat!’

13 “But he answered one of them, ‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Didn’t you agree with me for a denarius?

14 Take that which is yours, and go your way. It is my desire to give to this last just as much as to you.

15 Isn’t it lawful for me to do what I want to with what I own? Or is your eye evil, because I am good?’

16 So the last will be first, and the first last. For many are called, but few are chosen.”

The key factor to note above is everyone got the same pay. In essence, they were “joint heirs”. Just as those who labored the entire day for the same pay as those “eleventh hour” workers got disgruntled, many Jews who accepted Christ after he died as was raised from the dead were put off.

Acts 15:1 Some men came down from Judea and taught the brothers, “Unless you are circumcised after the custom of Moses, you can’t be saved.”

Acts 21:20 They, when they heard it, glorified God. They said to him, “You see, brother, how many thousands there are among the Jews of those who have believed, and they are all zealous for the law.

This conflict is arguably the first recorded major division in the new church. With centuries of tradition behind them, many of the new believing Jews decided if Gentiles were to be included, they would have to be circumcised. This didn’t just refer to the act of circumcision itself but adherence to all of Judean law. They simply could not wrap their heads around how Jesus paid for our sins!

Paul understood it and he taught it.

Ephesians 3:3 that by revelation the mystery has been made known to me, (according as I have written before briefly,

4 by which, in reading it, ye can understand my intelligence in the mystery of the Christ,)

5 which in other generations has not been made known to the sons of men, as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets in the power of the Spirit,

6 that they who are of the nations should be joint heirs, and a joint body, and joint partakers of his promise in Christ Jesus by the glad tidings;

7 of which I am become minister according to the gift of the grace of God given to me, according to the working of his power.

One should note here that the word “partakers” here means to “take fully”. In other words, everyone in the body of Christ is equal. There is not longer any difference between Jew and Gentile.

Ephesians 2:11 Therefore remember that once you, the Gentiles in the flesh, who are called “uncircumcision” by that which is called “circumcision,” (in the flesh, made by hands);

12 hat you were at that time separate from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of the promise, having no hope and without God in the world.

13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off are made near in the blood of Christ.

14 For he is our peace, who made both one, and broke down the middle wall of partition,

15 having abolished in the flesh the hostility, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man of the two, making peace;

16 and might reconcile them both in one body to God through the cross, having killed the hostility thereby.

17 He came and preached peace to you who were far off and to those who were near.

Ephesians 2:16 and might reconcile them both in one body to God through the cross, having killed the hostility thereby.

There you have it. No matter where we started from, as a Jew or as a Gentile, we now belong to the body of Christ. What does this mean?

Ephesians 2:18 For through him we both have our access in one Spirit to the Father.

19 So then you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God,

Read that again. We both have access by one spirit to the Father!

Access. It’s a big thing. Really. Here it is again:

Ephesians 3:12 in whom we have boldness and access in confidence through our faith in him.

Who is “whom”? Christ Jesus of course. Here it is declared we not only have access but boldness as well. God’s plan all along was to restore man to the original sinless state. In fact, since we were chosen “in him before the world’s foundation, that we should be holy and blameless before him in love”, God had designs on us even before Adam sinned! Furthermore, His intention was never for us to grovel before Him, pleading only after a blood sacrifice. He didn’t “lay down the law” in order to keep us in line and fearful.

Galatians 3:19 What then is the law? It was added because of transgressions, until the seed should come to whom the promise has been made. It was ordained through angels by the hand of a mediator.

Galatians 4:7 So you are no longer a bondservant [i.e. under the law], but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

There it is again! We are sons and therefore heirs. The law has served it’s purpose and now, since Christ, is no longer needed.

Galatians 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

And again there is that concept of “one”. What’s that all about?

Ephesians 4:1 I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to walk worthily of the calling with which you were called,

2 with all lowliness and humility, with patience, bearing with one another in love;

3 being eager to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as you also were called in one hope of your calling;

5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism,

6 one God and Father of all, who is over all, and through all, and in us all.

Let this sink in… we were both chosen and called. Remember Matthew 20:16

Matthew 20:16 So the last will be first, and the first last. For many are called, but few are chosen

Ephesians tells us we were chosen in 1:4 and called in 4:1. How do I know this? Look at whom this letter is addressed to:

Ephesians 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus through the will of God, to the saints who are at Ephesus, and the faithful in Christ Jesus:

Summing it all up, we were chosen and called to be joint heirs in one body with Christ as the head. This was no accident but was God’s plan for us all along and this is just the beginning. We are also members. What does that mean? How does this relate to our Christian walk?

I’ll discuss this in my next post.

Prepare Ye for Battle

Previously, I laid out the spiritual battle being waged before our eyes. This is not some fantastical dreamy ideological war. It is in your face real life warfare. Look around you. The whole “misinformation” agenda should be enough to convince anybody. Since when does open and honest debate present a danger to anybody? “Someone” or rather a certain faction, is intent on being the sole source of what information you are fed. Anyone who disputes or simply questions the “official version” is the enemy. The only trouble is, every so-called “official source” be it from government, an NGO, the media propagandists, or some sanctified “expert”, has been caught red-handed in their own lies again and again and again. Why is this important?

We Are Only Human

Wait a minute… ONLY human? What does that mean really? Human. Humans are unique beings on this planet. Sure some speculate about the intelligence of dolphins and whales and a few other animals but which of them build cities? What animal builds machines? Machines that fly? Machines that race across the planet on surfaces designed for them. What animals produce art? Music? What animals build libraries chock full of ideas and inventions and dreams? Only humans do these things. We are unique but we are not alone.

A spiritual world does exist and some of those spirit beings either visit or abide on this planet. We know little of how they live or what they really do or how they do what they do but we know they exist. They are not human. They are not animals. Some of their doings are revealed in scriptures. One of these spirit beings is identified as “the devil” or “the god of this world”

Matthew 4:8 Again, the devil taketh him [Jesus] up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;

9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.

10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

2 Corinthians 4:4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

Isn’t it interesting how much we can learn from three verses of scripture. The god of this world, the devil, wanted Jesus to worship him. He offered him “all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them” if Jesus would only worship him. Just as interesting is what Jesus did NOT say. He didn’t scoff and tell the devil he had no right to offer those things. Hmm. Nor did he laugh in the devil’s face, asking, incredulously, “you DARE ask GOD to worship YOU?” My own view here is Jesus said no such thing because the devil wasn’t asking God to worship him, he was asking the SON of God to worship him. If Jesus acceded, it would be game over. On to the third verse where we learn “the god of this world” has blinded the minds of those who do not believe.

The Gospel of Luke records a similar exchange:

Luke 4:5 And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.

6 And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.

7 If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine.

8 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

Again, Jesus did not dispute the devil’s claims. This spiritual war is not over power and glory. The devil already has all that. What he wants what he cannot have… worship. He wants God’s children to worship him. He wants to be our god but he has a problem. While he can corral us, distract us, draw us away from God Almighty, in order to grant him what he wants, we must willingly worship him.

This brings us back to the original question. Why is it important for the devil and his minions to control all information we receive. He already has control of most of it. He owns the media. He owns most of the government. He owns the big corporations. He is literally brimming with wealth and power. Why worry about those of us who oppose him?

A Battle of Wills

We may be “only human” but we are humans with free wills. Everything he does is an effort to entice us to worship him. Barring that, he desires to keep us from worshiping the One True God and His only begotten Son Jesus. God has truth on His side. The devil can only deal from his pack of lies, though he sprinkles his lies with a dash of truth now and then to keep us guessing. Now he’s on a tear to convince us the truth we seek is “misinformation”. Hello.

Whether you believe this or not, you are a part of this. You cannot help it. You are surrounded from the moment you wake up to the moment you fall asleep, you are inundated with information. There is no escape. The good news is you can choose much of what you receive, but you must choose it. Unless you live in a monastery, and the fact you are reading this kinda suggests you aren’t surrounded by monks, you are going to be subject to different sources of information. Guess who is bent on monopolizing the information you receive?

Yes, there is a resistance. We are not hiding in fear. We are boldly speaking, publishing, and standing on the Truth as we understand it.

2 Corinthians 10:3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:

4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)

5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

6 And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.

2 Timothy 2:2 And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.

3 Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.

4 No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.

Our war is not of the flesh. Our war is a spiritual war but the battleground is a battle of wills. In order to bend our will, the devil must seize our minds. He cannot control them directly. He must do so via subterfuge and deception. In order to do battle we must “be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.”

Ephesians 6:10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.

11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

Note the details of “armour of God” listed here.

About our loins is truth.

Righteousness is our breastplate – protecting our hearts.

Our feet? Shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace.

We are to use the shield of faith (believing) to quench the fiery darts of the wicked.

Our heads are protected with the helmet of salvation.

We carry the sword of the spirit – the word of God.

Not one of those six components protect us from a physical attack! Why? Because our battle is spiritual. While this in no way suggests we Christians should allow ourselves or our loved ones to be “run through” with a foe thrusting a steel sword at us, our focus needs to aim higher. A dead man cannot accept Christ.

What About Those Guys With Guns?

We are also surrounded by violent men. I get that. Jesus was lead to his death by armed soldiers. Paul was imprisoned, as was Peter. Before that John the Baptist was jailed and then beheaded as a party favor for Herodias’ daughter. In fact, throughout the history of the Jews, their prophets were treated woefully and often killed.

Mark 8:35 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel’s, the same shall save it.

36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

37 Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

38 Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.

Today, just today, I read where Joe Biden again threatened anyone who dared “rise up against the government” saying we’d better have F-15s and nuclear weapons or some such nonsense. First, I’d remind his handlers there is no need for citizens to take up arms against our government as WE ARE the government. Second, our trust is rightfully placed, not in arms, but in God Almighty who is able to deliver us.

Psalms 20:6 Now know I that the LORD saveth his anointed; he will hear him from his holy heaven with the saving strength of his right hand.

7 Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God.

8 They are brought down and fallen: but we are risen, and stand upright

Psalms 44:5 Through thee will we push down our enemies: through thy name will we tread them under that rise up against us.

6 For I will not trust in my bow, neither shall my sword save me.

7 But thou hast saved us from our enemies, and hast put them to shame that hated us.

8 In God we boast all the day long, and praise thy name for ever.

Know this: time and time again God protected His people supernaturally. Many battles were won without any confrontation at all. Many individual believers, myself included, have had their lives’ spared from certain death, while others perished simply saving the life of another or even seemingly for no reason at all. No one can say beforehand what end they will meet without divine knowledge.

All I can say is one’s mindset will determine how any situation is faced. I refuse to live in fear. I refuse to beg for my life. I will not bow to any other than my God and my Lord Jesus. My life is in God’s hands and no other can take it.

Yes. We are in a spiritual war. Yes. We need to prepare ourselves and enter the fight as soon as we are able. But our weapons are not carnal but mighty through God. Should you choose to enter the battlefield, you need to prepare yourself. Renew your mind to God’s Word. Put on the new man. Be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.

VERIFIED! GOD is speaking!

A month or so ago, I came across this fellow Lance Wallnau on Real  America’s Voice.  I do believe is is a man of God.  I started saving his show Firewall on DVR. Due to some personal constraints, I haven’t caught up on his show. Last night my wife and I watched his December 31, 2022 broadcast. I was floored. So much of what he said are things I’ve been saying and posting here.

Compare the broadcast linked below with my Battlefield Earth three-part series. The final installment was posted on the same day this episode of Firewall was broadcast.

The Truth About America’s Destiny and the Role of the Church

This says to me God is speaking through more than just little ol’ me. I am humbled to be a part of God’s working in our nation.

More important is what God is saying. Brothers and sisters in Christ, we need to step up. Whether or not this nation is salvageable does not matter at this point. What matters is what you do here and now. Will you turn to God? Will you own up to your sins? Will you speak the truth? Will you commit to living a life pleasing onto Him?

Look around you. Our nation is in shambles. We no longer have the luxury of turning our heads, hoping it will all go away. Your church is not a safe space. If the enemy has not yet invaded, he is knocking on the door. There is a good chance someone will open it for him. It might even be you. Nor is your home safe from invasion. You have nowhere to turn.

The good news is God is right with us. He will never leave us nor forsake us. Seek Him out in prayer, in fellowship, in scripture. Hold fast. Stand.

World War III: Life in the War Zone

The three-part Battlefield Earth series of posts set the stage for World War III. If you missed these you can find part 1 here. While all of these posts are directed at Christians, the fact is, there are not any “conscientious objectors”, no neutral parties. No one is sitting this one out. No one. It’s not that participation is mandatory, but rather inescapable. You can no more refrain from taking part than you can stop breathing. So you might as well face facts and suck it up.

Of course you can ignore the truth. Many of you are well-practiced at that. Non-Christian, Christian, it doesn’t matter. You’ve bummed along, lived your life in the midst of chaos, paying no attention to all of what goes around you. Nobody will stop you from continuing on until the day you die, if you so choose. Somebody may put a gun to your head, literally or figuratively, but not me, nor will anyone who submits to God.

As for my Christian brethren, specifically, the same goes for you. If you’re thinking I have no idea about your walk with God, you are right. Nor will I presuppose I do. What I can put forth is my observations, both of my own life and the lives of those Christians I’ve known through the years. I’ll start with the beams in my own eyes.

God has blessed my life in many, many ways. This is not to say I haven’t see troubles. Of course I have but, overall, I have little, if anything, to complain about so I won’t. I know of many brothers and sisters who’ve had far more to deal with than myself. Looking back, I can easily see how many of those troubles I’ve had are a direct result of my own walk – typically those times when I strayed away from God. And, yes, I can see at least one period where, had I chose to be more diligent in my obedience to my Heavenly Father and stuck with that decision, I might have lived an entirely different life. Might making such a different choice resulted in fewer troubles? I doubt it. All I need do is look at the apostle Paul’s life. He was far more dedicated to living God’s Will than I could ever think of being and he had plenty of problems.

Day to day, in my own walk, I’ve not been such a great Christian. Sometimes I’ve been downright awful. Sure, I’m a work in progress, but there’s a lot of work to be done. Worse, I am in just as much danger of wandering off than I’ve ever been. It doesn’t take much. That said, I’m moving forward and making every effort to practice what I’m preaching. I don’t see myself as all that far ahead of anyone. It wouldn’t take much for anybody behind me to catch up and zoom ahead. Imagining our walk as a race, the front runner is way beyond where I can see.

Now that I’ve ventured into this walk/race analogy, I’ll continue on for a bit. We’ve all heard the “many paths” to God concept. Let’s go with that. Most say that to justify their own wanderings. What did Jesus say?

Matthew 7:13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:

14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

The problem with the “many paths” is countless of them are dead ends – in more ways than one. If one wanted make that statement more accurate, it would state: “there are many paths to gods”. The problem being there is only one God.

1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

If this post were widely read, I’d expect to hear a bunch of “weeping and gnashing of teeth”, first from those who reject Jesus and second from those who reject the One True God. You know who you are.

John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

You can either believe what Jesus said or not. I believe him. That settles it. Some of you who confess Christ as Lord and Savior try to hedge a bit and make excuses for those who steadfastly refuse accept Christ. Why? Some gloss over blatant wrong teaching. Why? Let me be clear: either you accept Jesus as Lord and Savior and believe God raised him from the dead or you do not. This is the starting point for being born again of God’s spirit.

Romans 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

The apostle Paul did not stop there. This was not the end-all, be-all of living a godly Christian life. From there we are instructed to put off the “old man” and put on the “new man”.

Romans 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

Ephesians 4:22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;

Ephesians 4:23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;

24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

Too many struggle with this. There is no reason for struggle. In any given situation, you know what the right thing to do is. Your struggle is not because you do not know. Your struggle is because the “right thing” is often not the “socially acceptable” thing. Rather than speak the truth, you tell a “little white lie” or worse. You justify your sins instead of facing them.

1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

When you know the right thing to do and you do something else, you sin. It’s that simple. You are putting on the old man rather than putting off the new man. Doing the right thing is putting on the new man.

So many agonize, sometimes for days, weeks and months begging God to reveal His Will for them. He has already revealed His Will. It is right in front of you. Put on the new man. Does He have more in store for you? Of course.

Matthew 25:23 His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.

One thing I wish I’d taken to heart early on is summed up in the cliché “grow where you’re planted”. I cannot count the number of times I found myself praying to get out of a situation God had put me in. At other times, I more likely assumed God’s Will rather than seeking it. Who knows (other than God Himself) where I might be today had I heeded that sage advice? So now, I strongly suggest giving it a shot. Grow where your planted. How can you do this?

Focus on putting off the old man and putting on that new man.

Ephesians 4:21 If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus:

22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;

23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;

24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

25 Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.

26 Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:

27 Neither give place to the devil.

28 Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.

29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:

32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.

Ephesians 5:1 Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;

2 And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.

3 But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints;

4 Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.

5 For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

6 Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.

7 Be not ye therefore partakers with them.

8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:

9 (For the fruit of the Spirit [Light, the Greek word “phos”, translated “light, not pneuma, the Greek word for spirit.] is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)

10 Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.

11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.

12 For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.

13 But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light.

14 Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.

15 See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,

16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

17 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.

18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;

20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

Notice there is a lot more “putting off” than “putting” on in the above verses. They may seem to focus too much on the negative but what it really comes down to is treating others and yourself well.

Ephesians 5:19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;

20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

If you just did those things in the above two things diligently – speaking godly things to yourself and giving thanks – you wouldn’t recognize yourself in a week’s time. When you win this crucial territory for God, you’ve gained important ground in this spiritual battle. What then?

Be forewarned – your efforts will not go unnoticed. You should be prepared for the other side to fight back. Expect them to attack with a vengeance. How? They will throw everything at you they possibly can – at home, at work, on the road and so on. They will prod and probe and use any person, any tool they can possibly utilize to throw you off track, to distract you, to convince you to turn away from anything godly. This is life in the war zone.

Let’s face it, if you already spend most or all of your time working for the other side, or even simply being neutral (and how many of us are really “neutral”?) no doubt things are a lot smoother or rather, you’re already distracted enough with the messes you face every day. For most of us, life is one bothersome thing after another. It’s all we can do to trudge through each day. Add to that the problems others bring to you on a daily basis – your political co-worker, your sullen teenager, even those issues your best friend loves to share. No matter what life serves up day to day, good and bad, those things will not go away when you see them from a godly perspective.

Your car may still break down but instead of swearing at that piece of junk, maybe you’ll thank God it didn’t happen in the middle of nowhere. Or you can be thankful your auto insurance covers towing and you can afford to have it fixed. No matter how bad thinks look now, at some point, your situation will improve to where you can look back and be thankful. Why wait? Be thankful now. Worse case, you’ll end up in the same place at that future date but without the stress of all that angry cursing. Meanwhile, you’ll have gained ground on the adversary.

You don’t need to be drafted. You need no further commission. You are already in the war zone. Whether you recognize it or not, God has placed you right where He wants you to be. Your choice, your real choice is either you can put on that new man and gain valuable ground or you can continue on with the old man. Grow where your planted.

Battlefield Earth Part 3 Your Mission as a Christian

Summing up Parts 1 & 2 – there is a world-wide spiritual war going on right now, today. Nobody, but NOBODY can escape it. As a Christian, you are not only part of the battle but you are on the winning side and you are already equipped to do battle yourself. It’s up to you to as to what you do now.

For the sake of argument, let’s say you’ve accepted your part in all this. Now what? This is the question I’ll answer in this post. Fair warning: expect your life to change.

Your Battlefields

This spiritual war has two major battlefields – the mind and the environment. He uses your environment to attack your mind. Look around you. What around you cannot be influenced in some way by our adversary, the devil? Even most foods we eat are polluted to affect our health either directly or indirectly.

The devil’s primary weapon is the lie. Not only is he adept at utilizing this weapon but he has used his time on this earth to build mountains of lies spanning the globe. Upon these mountains, he piles lies upon more lies, using every available tool he can, from ancient parchments, to satellite television and the internet.

Consider how he uses lies to influence your mind. From the time you were born you’ve been inundated with information. While much of what you’ve learned over the years is true, a great deal of false information is seeded in to all of man’s knowledge.

Even God’s word has been corrupted. Consider the church you attend. (or any you’ve attended in the past) Can you say for certain this church stands on God’s Truth above all others? Is every doctrine, every teaching beyond question? If not, why not? If so, then why doesn’t every other church fall in line with what your church teaches?

1 Corinthians 14:33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints. (KJV)

The above verse is from the King James Version. Here is what another version, Young’s Literal Translation says:

1 Corinthians 14:33 for God is not a God of tumult, but of peace, as in all the assemblies of the saints. (YLT)

Is one of these more accurate or correct than the other? Which? What about other versions? How does this read in the Greek? Is the Greek the original Greek? (It is not, we have no originals.) Was Corinthians originally written in Greek? We cannot know for sure. So many questions, and yet we have so few answers.

This is just ONE verse of scripture! Is it any wonder the devil is having a field day with us? My point here is we all need to be aware of how the devil endeavors to manipulate every human on the planet from the day they are born into this world. It is only by the grace of God we are not all stark raving mad. Even as we are inundated with conflicting and confusing lies, God is able to push through all the static so His truth reaches us. Obviously we are not immune but we can trust God that we are where He needs us to be in this life.

1 John 4:4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

I don’t know where you were spiritually and/or mentally before you accepted Jesus as Lord but I was an avowed atheist. I’d bought into evolution hook, line, and sinker. I rejected the existence of any god, gods, or spirits. In other words, I was about as far from God as I could get. Yet, looking back, I can see where God protected me even in my unbelief. He sheltered me as I rejected Him. Since that day when I accepted Christ, nearly 50 years ago, I’ve had good days and not-so-good days. Bluntly put, I’ve had downright awful days, even weeks. Just like anyone else, I wasn’t instantly transformed into some perfect, all-knowing saint. Today, I’m still far from any semblance of perfection. I doubt if that mark will even be in sight on the day I die (or Christ returns).

In short, the devil remains relentless in his attacks and I am still vulnerable to at least some of them. We can all expect to experience some vulnerability for as long as we draw breath. My goal here is to help you get to a better place than you are right now and continue on, possibly taking those things I show you and soar. Surely this passage is familiar to all of us:

Mark 4:3 Hearken; Behold, there went out a sower to sow:

4 And it came to pass, as he sowed, some fell by the way side, and the fowls of the air came and devoured it up.

5 And some fell on stony ground, where it had not much earth; and immediately it sprang up, because it had no depth of earth:

6 But when the sun was up, it was scorched; and because it had no root, it withered away.

7 And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up, and choked it, and it yielded no fruit.

8 And other fell on good ground, and did yield fruit that sprang up and increased; and brought forth, some thirty, and some sixty, and some an hundred.

One thing that struck me recently is the above is true every time we hear God’s Word! Maybe you realized this long ago. No one can accuse me of catching on quick. Look again at Jesus’ explanation of the above parable in light of the devil’s constant efforts to keep us from God’s Truth.

Mark 4:14 The sower soweth the word.

15 And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts.

16 And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground; who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with gladness;

17 And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word’s sake, immediately they are offended.

18 And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word,

19 And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.

20 And these are they which are sown on good ground; such as hear the word, and receive it, and bring forth fruit, some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some an hundred.

Look at all the ways the wicked one attempts to prevent us from hearing God’s Word and producing fruit. He steals it away when he can. If that fails, he brings affliction (trouble) or persecution. Barring that, he distracts us with worldly cares, lusts (desires), and even riches. Look again at the world around you. Can you see how much trouble the devil goes to in order to prevent you from pursuing God? What can anyone do?

Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

In one verse we are told three things right off the bat –

do not be conformed to this world.

be transformed

renew your mind

So we can prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Wow. That’s a lot, don’t you think? I can tell you from nearly 50 years of trying, it’s not all that easy! What, exactly are we supposed to “renew our minds” to? God’s Word, of course. Let’s consider another passage where we are exhorted to renew our minds.

Ephesians 4:21 If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus:

22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;

23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;

24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

The term “new man” may seem to be another figure of speech (and it may be), however in this case it can be taken as literally true because we are born again of God’s spirit and thus we truly are a “new creature in Christ”. Verse 24 says this new man which after [according to] God, is created in righteousness and true holiness.

Our first assignment as Christians is to renew our minds to God’s Word. Imagine yourself being part of this Roman church in the first century. Imagine all you had was this letter from the Apostle Paul. Certainly this epistle to the Romans contains enough truth to renew your mind, however we have far more than this. We have the seven church epistles and then some. If you look, really look at them, it soon become obvious God’s instructions aren’t all that mysterious. Do good things. Think good things. Be good to others. Okay I’m simplifying a lot but in the end it’s not rocket science either. Sure you can dig out lots of details but, deep down, you know how to do what’s right. After all, God created holy spirit within you.

2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

Ephesians 4:24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

1 Peter 1:23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

1 John 3:9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

Speaking of sin… we need to get right with God. The subject of sin is probably the most debated and agonized topic we Christians face. It is well worthy of a deep study and far beyond the scope of this article. For now, understand while we cannot escape from sin, God does forgive us when we ask.

1 John 1:6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:

7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

This is not only crucial for our own well-being but also when we take the next step – dealing with the outside world.

Luke 6:39 And he spake a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? shall they not both fall into the ditch?

40 The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect [fully trained WEB] shall be as his master.

41 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but perceivest not the beam that is in thine own eye?

42 Either how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother’s eye.

43 For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.

44 For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes.

45 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

Notice in verse 40 above I inserted the World English Bible (WEB) rendering for “perfect” in brackets. While I want to be consistent in my use of the KJV in this article, I felt the WEB rendering was more clear, especially in the verse noted above.

Let’s again consider our lives before and after we accept Christ. I’m sure you’ve been taught we were all “born in sin”. We are sinful creatures from day one, thanks to Adam’s original sin. This is certainly true. Beyond that truth of being born in sin, we are also immersed in sin from the day we are born. Sure some of us were born in Christian families so we’ve been spared at least some of the devil’s influence. I’m sure you can see where the devil has invaded just about everywhere. Nobody lives in a sealed, godly environment.

Once we are born again, we are given a clean slate, spiritually and we become a new creature, a spiritual creature. As wondrous as this is, we must still deal with the mental baggage we’ve collected over the years along with the same, devil-polluted environment we grew up in. This is where our battle begins. While most of us cannot withdraw from the world entirely, we can limit our exposure to the toxicity and mitigate what we cannot escape. In other words, we need not watch MSNBC. (or any “news” channel for that matter.) We can certainly avoid those things we know are ungodly at the core. And we can feed our minds on godly things instead. In other words, we can renew our minds.

Now maybe you caught this principle already when it was stated before. It could be you are way ahead of me on this. No matter what the devil inundates us with – we can remain undefiled.

Luke 6:45 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

Mark 7:18 And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him;

19 Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats?

20 And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.

21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,

22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:

23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

How can we remain undefiled? By renewing our minds to God’s Word and thereby pushing out those evil things. Do not expect this to happen overnight. Nobody said it would be would be easy, but it can be accomplished. Every godly thought displaces an evil one. Every victory, no matter how small, gains territory for God. Now we are ready to gain even more ground.

Winning the Battles of Our Environment

Up until now, I’ve focused on renewing your own mind. This is crucial to entering the battles raging all around us. Most of us cannot fight on a large scale. That’s okay because every single one of us have plenty of skirmishes to fight on our “home fronts”. In fact, most of the challenges we face are right in front of us.

If you haven’t noticed by now, take a good look at some of the verses dealing with evil, sin and so forth.

Mark 7:21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,

22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:

Galatians 5:19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,

21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

Ephesians 5:3 But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints;

All of the above encompasses our dealings with each other. Surely an alcoholic an drown himself alone. Many do. This same goes for many ungodly behaviors. That said, nearly every ungodly behavior involves human contact on some level and many would not be possible without being involved with at least one other person. Does that make sense?

If godly behavior gains ground for God, then who benefits from ungodly behavior? If every action you take, everything you say, can be deemed either godly or ungodly, then you can either gain ground for God, gain ground for the god of this earth, or perfectly balance your actions so neither side gains anything. I contend either you are working for God or against Him.

While the devil puts every effort into affecting your environment, simply living a godly life, ensuring every action you take, every word you speak, as much as you possibly can, strikes a blow for God. Even the smallest gain puts another mark in the win column. Everything you do goes in one column or the other.

Galatians 5:13 For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.

14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

15 But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another.

16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

Ephesians 5:8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:

9 (For the fruit of the Spirit [Gr. phos = light] is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)

18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;

20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

The battle lines are clearly drawn. Every moment you draw breath you have a choice. What will your next choice be?

Battlefield Earth Part 2 – We Are Soldiers in a Spiritual War

In Part 1 – Overview of Battlefield Earth, I laid out a bird’s eye view of the war we are facing right now. While this war has raged for centuries, the battlefield has spread to nearly every corner of the earth. Why? Because man has spread to every corner of the earth.

We humans do not see many of these battles happening around us as warlike. Instead we point to armed combatants facing off to kill each other. That’s war… isn’t it? Is it? What about the invasion of our southern borders? What about the millions struggling with addiction? What about those little battles at your office? Lives are at stake. Even the most imperceptible disagreement can start a ripple that fuels a Tsunami. Asked the relatives of those employees killed by a crazed co-worker. The trouble is, you may never know until you are looking certain death in the face.

From up on high, we can see how evil invades every aspect of our lives, from the White House and the Halls of Congress to the break room at work. Even, or maybe especially, churches are lulled into false doctrines. From the books of Acts, Corinthians, and Galatians in particular, we learn the body of Christ was attacked and divided early on. Today the body of Christ is splintered into thousands of sects or denominations. Is this what God wanted for Christians? I’m not buying it. Rather, this is the result of endless attacks on the truth by the devil himself.

While this spiritual war encompasses the entire planet and invades our lives at every level, we need not feel overwhelmed. Nor should we despair. We know how it all turns out. God has revealed this to us. He wins. WE win. All we need to do is win the territory we stand on.

As I write this, the conflict in Ukraine rages on while China threatens Taiwan. How do these faraway conflicts threaten you personally? Unless your boots are on the ground in these or some other hot spot, chances are your life is not likely to be directly affected. You’ve got other things to worry about… right? Of course you do, that’s the point. Those crime waves in Chicago or New York only matter if you live in or near the affected areas. For those of us blessed to be insulated from such troubles, we still are never immune from attacks from the dark side. Like it or not, the spiritual world war is at your own doorstep. Actually, as you are reading this, the war has invaded your living space. Turn on your television or radio, open your mail, open any web page and you are sure to find an evil influence somewhere. What about this blog? You are not inundated with ads. I don’t do “click bait”. You aren’t even asked to “subscribe” to anything. It is about as clean a website as you’ll find anywhere. Am I immune from deception? I doubt it. While I will never, EVER knowingly post or allow any overt or covert ungodly material, I cannot guarantee you won’t ever find any here. Nor can I explicitly say I never have, or ever will post anything that is inaccurate or untrue. I do my very best but I am human and therefore fallible. And I’m sure some of my Christian brethren would point out (some gleefully) some doctrinal “heresies” I’ve posted. For one thing, I do not believe in a trinity. This alone separates me from, I’d say, 90+ percent of Christianity. I will stand by my understanding until God sees fit to change it.

My point in the above paragraph is nobody can escape this war. You cannot hide from it. It is invasive. Of course you can passively resist or refuse to participate. As the quote often attributed to Edmund Burke states:

“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”

Of course evil will never triumph in the long run, but are you willing to allow it to rampage? It’s easy enough to nod your head or shake it and click your way to a more comfortable topic. If you are still reading, chances are you at least want to know what you can do. That’s the easy part. Paradoxically, it is also the most difficult. Easy as in, you need not quit work, pack your bags, or buy a ticket to ride. In fact, you already have everything you need if you have accepted Christ as your savior.

2 Corinthians 3:3 Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.

4 And such trust have we through Christ to God-ward:

5 Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God;

Philippians 4:19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

What about gear? Don’t we need gear?

Ephesians 6:10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.

11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

Fact is, we have it all. We are battle ready right now.

Colossians 2:10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:

What about training? It’s one thing to “have it all” it is quite another to know what to do with it. Quite right. That is the hard part. You see, we have it all. In fact, if you think about it, we have far more than those brethren in Christ the Apostle Paul was writing to. In order to get a really good handle on this, you’ll need to imagine those times. They had no internet, no telephones or any of the speedy advantages we enjoy today. Travel was slow, often taking days, weeks or months. Communication was by word of mouth and/or hand-delivered letters (epistles).

Take the epistle to the Ephesians for example. It was hand-delivered. According to my understanding, it was delivered by two of Paul’s appointees who also were able to clarify any difficult parts. Other than living in a culture we barely understand, this was one of their few advantages. Of course they spoke the language and no doubt at least some of them could read the epistle themselves. Not to mention, they were blessed with the original letter itself or at least an exact copy. One other thing, it seems many of these letters were “circular epistles”, meaning they were shared with other groups.

2 Peter 3:15 And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you;

16 As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.

This letter from Peter was written to “to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ”. Who were these believers? It’s hard to say for sure but what we can derive from the passage above is some churches had more the one of Paul’s epistles, as well as this letter of Peter’s. Thus the Ephesians may have also seen the epistles to the Corinthians or the Thessalonians and such. We do not know. What we can be confident in the understanding that the Ephesians had, at the very least, the letter addressed to them. Other than direct teaching by the Apostle Paul and others taught directly by him, their advantages were few.

Fast forward to the present. We have seven church epistles, the gospels, as well as other instruction. Plus we have the “Old Testament”, the Hebrew bible, so to speak. We also enjoy a host of luxurious resources the early church could never even imagine. The downside is, we’ve had centuries of wrong teaching. From the very first, the devil has worked hard to corrupt God’s truth. By the time the Nicene Creed was first accepted in the third century, our understanding was almost hopelessly scrambled to the end that, even today, the Nicene Creed, is considered a standard by many – so much so that any Christian who dares question it is considered a heretic. For the recorded, I not only question it, but I reject it, or at least the parts referring to trinitarian doctrine – “one God in three persons” and “God the Son”, as neither of these terms are found anywhere in scripture. For anyone who cares to seek out a better understanding of that period in history…

One fascinating little book “When Jesus Became God” is an excellent read. It is authored by a non-practicing Jewish historian who delved into the events of the third century. Naturally, as a non-trinitarian, I eagerly devoured the book in hopes of finding vindication of my beliefs from a neutral source. In that I was disappointed. The author remained neutral on the topic and presented no evidence to shore up either side of the debate. What he did demonstrate was how utterly confused both sides were on the topic. My own conclusion could be summed up as, “they were all nuts!”. Okay, maybe that’s a bit harsh, but seriously, I came away thinking both sides had abandoned any real study of the scriptures/letters/resources they had and instead built their spiritual houses on sandy beaches. The really sad thing is, they were far more likely to have enjoyed access to much earlier copies of the letters we have now, if not the originals.

Coming back to the present, we should at least recognize the differences and the challenges we face today, as well as what Christians in the early church dealt with. Most importantly, we should recognize the great gift of “The Holy Bible” we now enjoy, not to mention the study aids we have to dig in. What good is that?

It is the counter to the devil’s propaganda campaign. ALL of the devil’s lies can be dealt with using this one, easy to access, collection of truth. It is a training manual and reference guide all in one. It is the “sword of the spirit”. It is readily available in several formats and languages. We can even access these truths from a cell phone almost anywhere in the world.

BUT! I’M NO EVANGELIST! You say

Neither am I. At least, at this point, I am reasonably certain God has not tapped me to evangelize in the traditional sense of the word. Scripturally, God identifies five of what some term “gift ministries” – apostles, preachers, teachers, prophets and evangelists for certain. (Ephesians 4:11) Are there more? Probably. If I have any calling at all, it is to write. At least writing is something that I am inclined to do and I’ve done a great deal of it. While some cringe at the thought of a keyboard, I itch to sit down and start typing. The fact is, “gift ministry” or not, God has called each of us for a purpose.

Ephesians 1:10 That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him:

11 In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:

12 That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.

Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.

30 Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.

2 Timothy 1:9 Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,

God knew who and what we were before the world began. He had already made a place for us, called us and did so for a reason. God does nothing haphazardly. Why should He? He knows exactly how each action will affect every other action. That is part of what makes Him God. He knew before the foundation of the world you would read this now and what you will do with what you read. So… what is your place? What are you suppose to do?

1 Corinthians 12:12 For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.

13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

14 For the body is not one member, but many.

1 Corinthians 12:27 Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.

We are all members of the body of Christ. I have never seen myself as some “great one”. (Okay, so I have dreamed a bit but we’re talking realistically here. I also dream of winning a big lottery now and then.) Sometimes I wonder if anyone ever reads what I write. I certainly never made enough to live, must less retire on. Still I write. Some of my siblings in Christ not only write, but they preach, have huge ministries and/or make big bucks with their works. One thing I can tell you for sure, they do not do what I do. They have their place, I have mine. So be it. If I’ve been so dull all these years as to miss opportunities God as laid right out in front of me, then one day I’ll know. Meanwhile I’m content to understand that if God REALLY wanted me to do something else, He’d find a way. Ask Moses or Jonah.

One thing is for sure, it is not my job to tell you what to do with your life. I can only bring you so far. You’ll need to check with the Boss for further instructions. Oh, I’m not through with you yet, but I’m just saying, my offerings are more general in nature. Speaking of that…

On to Part 3. Now here’s some godly insight, when I first started typing this series of posts, I had no idea there would be anything beyond the first post. In fact that first post is not even the first draft. I wrote half a book before I stopped (okay, maybe I’m exaggerating a little here), outlined the important parts, and started from scratch. So Part 3 will offer some more specifics (generally speaking 🙂 on how to put all this together and jump into the battle. A hint here, you’ve already started, or at least you have enough to get started. I expect some of you are way ahead of me and are moving ahead. If this is you I can only advise you to go where God leads you. It’s not my place to hold anyone back.
